Triple Book Review: Social Media Marketing 101

Social Media Is Bullshit by B.J. Mendelson — Reviews, Discussion, Bookclubs, ListsThe first book I read,’ Social Media is Bullshit’  I saw and wasn’t sure if it was the right book for me to be reading…but it was in the right section. He had to be onto something.

I was right, it was a great, quick read that likely saved me countless hours of extra reading! It was a little disheartening initially but it was serendipedously timed as the primer for any future reading. I’d recommend it if you’re into this sort of thing!

Social Media is bullshit kind of settles your sights back to reality *spoiler alert* Corporations own the internet so if you become a Youtube millionare you are a very brilliant outlier in a system of social media sharecropping. Thumbs up!Book Review - Social Media is Bullshit, by B.J. Mendelson

He really took some time outlining this very carefully, dividing the knowledge into four sections. Social Media is Bullshit, Meet the People Behind the Bullshit, How to Sell Bullshit Without Really Trying and How to Really Make it on the Web.

B.J. emphasized that things tend to go viral on their own if they are

  1. Easy to understand
  2. Easy to use
  3. Easy to share

and give it a little momentum!

You don’t have to pay Instagram darlings to hawk your wares; just create a good product or service that follows the above guidelines and launch it amongst friends, family and your local community! A referral from them will go much further in the long run…

But, if after knowing everything that goes inside the hot dog, you still want to eat? B.J. Mendelson will show you how to best shuck those sausages… He gives straightforward tips like:

  • Position yourself with surety, it’s happening and you ARE the expert….
  • Oh you aren’t an expert? Well fake it til you make it then, align what you’re saying with what some expert already said.
  • Simultaneously getting connected with some actual experts, and get ta learning, quick!
  • Okay now you’ve got a little credibility….keep doing it, for like weeks, then months, then *gasp* years, okay, now you’re an expert!

Medelson postulates, quite soundly that very few people are actually revolutionary, most are just re-using and re-packaging original content and concepts in their own ways to generate audiences for various purposes. [i.e. Aren’t blogs just journals online? and aren’t journals just thoughts on paper?]

His promotion of core marketing strategies in such a simplified way makes this a good primer. Few examples:

  • Tap into current events, and  seasonal topics, for a chance to promote your product or service…
  • Create/highlight a problem, create confidence you can fix it, do just that.
  • Bad press? Negative feedback on content? Just keep generating, just keep generating, just keep generating. Until it’s buried like the trash it was…now then!
